Fantastic Trends and their origin story!

In this ongoing series, I have mentioned the origin story of various stories! Here are more! Hope you enjoy!

  • Cuff : Though Coco Chanel is sometimes credited with creating the cuff, they were actually the brainchild of Fulco di Verdura. She had a lot of lovers who gave her a lot of jewelry, which she asked Verdura to reset. He came up with the cuff, and Chanel was enchanted by his bizarre and surreal style. She wore the cuffs everywhere, making them one of her trademarks. Wonder Woman, however, must be one of the most famous cuff wearers of all time. With a gold, star-emblazoned cuff on each arm, she stops bullets with her indestructible bracelets and looks fabulous while doing it.

  • Polo Shirt : In the 19th and early 20th centuries, tennis players wore long-sleeved wooven shirts, which made playing cumbersome. René Lacoste, an international tennis champion, designed a short-sleeve cotton-knit shirt to wear on the court. He added a crocodile emblem on the left breast, because the American Press called him “le crocodile”. This is reportedly the first instance of a brand logo being sewn on the outside of a piece of clothing.

  • Nail Polish : Chinese royalty invented nail polish over 5000 years ago. Royals wore nail polish colours based on their dynasty. Ming dynasty wore red and black, whereas, Chou dynasty wore gold and silver. In ancient Egypt, Queens wore shades based on their rank. Queen Nefertiti wore a ruby red(stained their nails with henna plant) and Cleopatra wore a rust red (such stylish queens!), but the lower-ranked women were permitted to use only very pale colors.

  • Jeans : In 1853, gold miners wanted strong, sturdy clothes, and Leo Strauss (who later changed his name to Levi) started a wholesale business to meet the demand. Jeans gained notoriety in 1930s, when actors started to wear them in all the popular Western movies. Famous designers started to make their own jean designs with their labels in ’80s.

Frye Boots : The Frye Company was founded in 1863 and its boots were worn by soldiers for both sides of the Civil War, Teddy Roosevelt, and servicemen in World Wars I and II. In the ‘60s, women began to wear Frye boots in clear and bold defiance of restrictive 1950s femininity. They were a boot that meant strength and power, which women were intent on claiming at the time. High heels took a backseat to these clunky, chunky boots.
